Cy and I joined Joe, Eva and Dom at a new beach on Sunday. About 15 minutes outside of town, we pulled off the road and parked at the top of a cliff in a mostly-abandoned cluster of dilapidated vacation homes. We hiked only about 5 minutes but almost straight downhill on a somewhat treacherous path with our beach umbrellas and snorkels (and beer - Joe helpfully always brings me one beer when we go to the beach together) to a very rocky, small stretch of beach in a deep cove between two cliffs. Compared to our more-populated beach experiences, we were one of only about 5 groups of people on the beach. Snorkeling amongst the big boulders just off shore we saw large schools of fish, and there was
sea glass everywhere. Cyrus is newly confident in the water, reasonably happily swimming in water way over his head and able to float comfortably in the very salty sea. 2.5 hours and it was perfect ... almost. In the final swim of the day, Dom and Joe both got stung by a jellyfish. Dom recovered quickly (Joe cried for a bit longer) when a nice neighbor on the beach applied ice. I learned a new word (
medusa) and on the walk back up Dominic educated me all about jellyfish. (They don't have brains, and, a Portuguese man-of-war is not actually a jellyfish. I have not fact-checked these claims ...)
Hope both patients have recovered...
