Switzerlandia

Next, we traveled to Switzerland. We stayed in a house called, “visionshaus!” Charlotte and I had a bedroom, Gus and the twins had a bedroom, Vicki had a bedroom, Christian had a bedroom, and Oma and Pops had a bedroom. There was a hot tub and there was a salon in the house! The salon was small. It had a massage chair and a sauna. But still, A MASSAGE CHAIR AND A SAUNA!!!! Oma and Pops are my dad’s parents. When my dad and Christian were little, they lived in Switzerland but not in this part of it. We went on long steep hikes and when we got back, we were so tired!
Later in the week, we went to my dad’s part of Switzerland and since Oma and Pops’ friends in Switzerland all have a room in an apartment building, we stayed in their friend Barbra Alp's [a good name for a Swiss citizen--Piers] apartment since she was on vacation. Oma and Pops threw a 50th anniversary party where we all got fancy. I played with the twins and Gus the whole time so they did not bother the adults. The party was very fun for everyone.

The picture of Gus running towards the screen actually has a backstory so I will explain it now. So, do you see that other boy next to my cousin Gus with his hands up? That kid is named Julian. Once upon a time Julian and his family were at a show that showed knights niding horses that Julian loved. The person in the show he loved the most was called the black knight. The black knight did a special trick on his horse where he rode with his hands in the air. Julian, in that picture of him racing with Gus, was galloping. It was a galloping race. And since the show that Julian loved so much included the knights riding horses, he rode like the black knight. So when he pretended to be riding a horse, he rode like the black knight.

ReplyDeleteOur friend Barbara — the one who let the Norris Turners use her apartment in Zurich — is Barbara Alb, not Alp. The words are pronounced the same, but they mean different things. An Alp is a high mountain pasture. The Alps mountains were named for their Alps. An Alb is an incubus, a kind of demon said to come into one's bed at night. The German word for nightmare is Albtraum (i.e., Alb-dream). The German spelling used to be Alptraum, but eventually the German Spelling Police intervened, so the much more appropriate Albtraum is now standard. And, of course, schoolkids have to learn the standard spelling. — Pops
